“IOWA AND WISCONSIN” Thomas Gamaliel Bradford. Boston: Weeks, Jordan and Co., c. 1838. Rare first edition – rare first issue – with outline color.   (Image: 14 ¼ x 11 ¼ ‘’)

Very fine & beautifully engraved map with original outline color.  Engraved by G. W. Boynton (owner of an engraving company in Boston 1830’s - 40’s).  From An Illustrated Atlas, Geographical, Statistical and Historical of the United States and Adjacent Countries by T.  G.  Bradford.

This rare detailed map is based on the map by Nicollet. The portion of Iowa Territory (established in 1838) depicted is primarily Indian Lands, with only Dubque, Cook, Musqueti, Louisa, Herny, Des Moines, Lee, and Van Buren Counties shown.

The new state of Wisconsin (1836) is partially shown with most of the counties detailed lying south of the Wisconsin River.

The Lands to the North include New York Indian Lands. Massive Iowa and Brown Counties are shown. Many early forts, rapids, portages, etc. are shown.

This is the first appearance of Iowa and Wisconsin on a commercial atlas map. The inset tracks the drainage of the Missouri River to Canada and shows many Indian Tribal lands, forts etc.
