“…MAP OF TEXAS AND INDIAN TERRITORY…” New York:  H. H. Lloyd & Co. for Warner & Beers, c. 1875. Lithographed map with original hand-coloring. (Not listed in Day, Maps of Texas, or Taliaferro, Cartographic Sources in the Rosenberg Library). (Image: 16 ¾ x15’’)

This exceptional map depicts Texas only a decade after the Civil War. Counties are named and in contrasting colors.

This 1875 edition is the only American atlas map to locate “Wigefarth” County in North Texas (misspelled on the map – should be Wegefarthnamed for C. Wegefarth, president of the Texas Immigrant Aid and Supply Company).  That county existed only from 1873 until the legislature created fifty-four new Panhandle counties in 1876.

The newly created Pecos County in West Texas is shown (created out of Presidio County) “Presidio” is still titled across the now two counties.. Several railroads, wagon roads and waterways are located. Topographical features are shown and most major cities, towns, and military forts are identified.

Indian Territory is also well detailed with the region of the originally relocated Five Civilized Tribes boldly noted (Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, Chickasaw and Choctaw).  Other tribes subsequently removed to the Indian Territory are also shown.

A highly informative and very scarce view of Texas and Indian Territory as they were known in the 1870’s!
