A crisp original etching by Chifflart (Chifflard) (1825-1901).

Nicolas Francois Chifflart was a French Painter and etcher/engraver who was born in Saint-Omer, Pas de Calais in 1825 and died in Paris in 1901. He was admitted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1844 and two years later he became a pupil of Léon Cogniet. In 1850 he won third prize in the Prix de Rome competition with Zenobia on the Banks of the River. T he next year he won the Prix de Rome with an equally classical and academic Salon machine, Pericles at the Deathbed of his Son. At the Salon of 1859 his drawings, Faust in Combat and Faust at the Sabbat were admired by Charles Baudelaire and Théophile Gautier. Chifflart produced numerous engravings and etchings of which many appeared in the publications of the “Societe des Aquafortistes” and in "L'Illustration Nouvelle." In 2010, Chifflart’s 1865 etching "Cholera in Paris" was included in a show at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC titled, "The Darker Side of Light: Arts of Privacy, 1850-1900," Nicolas F. Chifflart is Listed in Benezit, Mallett and Davenport.
