EARLY CHRISTIAN ARTIFACT - “Asperging Wand” (Holy Water Sprinkler)

Eastern Roman/ Byzantine, c. 7th-12th Century AD 

Size: 7 inches (177 mm) in length.

An unusual bronze artifact from the early period of Christianity. This bronze wand was used by a priest to sprinkle (asperge) holy water during services. The dove atop the wand is symbolic of the Holy Spirit. The three circle design on the dove’s tail represents the Trinity. (Ref: G. Ferguson, “Signs and Symbols in Christian Art”).

In excellent condition with an attractive green patina.
