GOLD and STONE SEAL RING with “Zeus”

Ancient Roman, Circa 2nd - 3rd Century AD

Oval Red Stone Intaglio: 10 x 7 mm - size 8 - 8 1/2

An attractive ancient Roman intaglio seal ring in a gold setting with a dark red seal stone (probably Jasper). The intaglio is carved with an image of the profile bust of Zeus. This ring is in an excellent state of preservation with some surface toning. The band is soft, nearly pure gold, constructed of a rounded band with a raised oval bezel. Accompanying the ring is an impression of the seal.

From an English collection.

The Signet, or Seal Ring, was significant in Roman society, as it was used in validating serious legal documents by its owner.  Intaglios, and engraved or intaglio-cut gems could serve as seals, even while appearing decorative.  Cicero mentions them, and Pliny cites that the fashion of wearing signet rings eventually shifted to the little finger.  A signet ring was highly representative of the individual who wore it.  It was, in effect, his or her signature.
