c 1635 "Gastinois et Senonois" Blaeu - South of Paris

$275.00

“GASTINOIS ET SENONOIS” Amsterdam: Willem J. Blaeu, c. 1635.  Fine engraved map with original hand-coloring. Verso text: Latin. (Image : 15 x 19 ½ ’’). Clean and bright color- there is an extraneous soft fold parallel to the original centerfold (which has some abrasion).

This very attractive early 17th century map depicts the Essonne Region in North central France – located south of Paris. The confluence of the Seine & Essonne rivers are shown, as is the famous city of Orleans (on the Loire river).

The Fontainebleau Forest – famous for its chateaux – former residence of French Kings & now the summer residence of French Presidents, is located on the left bank of the Seine.

Most towns, cities, forests and waterways are identified. The beautiful and elaborate title cartouches and coat-of-arms further enhance the map.

Blaeu was founder of the leading 17th century Dutch cartographic firm. “The achievements of the firms of Blaeu were remarkable, & the palm for supremacy in map production in any age must be awarded to the Blaeu” (Tooley: Maps & Map-Makers, p. 33).
