''UNITED STATES'' Philadelphia:  Anthony Finley, c. 1827.  Very fine engraved map with full original hand-coloring.(Image: 11 1/8 x 8 1/2'’)

This handsome historical map depicts the United States with states and territories named and in contrasting colors.

Most of the region looks similar to today with the following exceptions: a huge Michigan Territory (established in 1805 & statehood in 1837), The Northwest Territory (would become part of Wisconsin Territory in 1836 and Minnesota Territory in 1849), Missouri Territory (Missouri became a state in 1821, the remaining Territory would soon become part of the territories of Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska), and Arkansas Territory (Arkansas gained statehood & a reduced boundary in 1836). The portion labeled as Mexico would become part of Texas in 1836.

Topographical features are depicted with major cities, towns, mountains and waterways identified. Early forts and Indian tribal regions are also noted.  A fine example from Finley’s scarce atlas, which was highly praised for its elegance and clarity.
