c 1851 UNITED STATES - Phelps, Fanning & Co

$75.00

“UNITED STATES”   New York 1851. Published by Phelps, Fanning and Co. Original woodblock map, two parts joined.(Image: 4 5/8 x 8 ¼ ’’)

This very scarce map was issued in the First Edition of “The American Lawyer” by Delos W. Beadle. The book was a guide to the laws and regulations of the various states.

This detailed map shows the United States with states & territories named & delineated.  The new State of Wisconsin (admitted in 1848) is shown, but Minnesota Territory (established in 1849 – statehood 1858) includes much of the present-day Dakotas.

Nebraska Territory shown here would change a great deal - finally becoming part of Wyoming, part of the Dakotas, Montana & part of Nebraska.

Oregon Territory (statehood 1859) includes present-day Washington State & extends eastward into present-day Idaho.

Indian Territory is rarely seen in this configuration (includes part of today's Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma).  The southwestern U.S. border follows the Gila River (the Gadsden Purchase was finalized in 1853 – two years after this map was published). A very unusual map!!!!

Presented in an archival 12 x 14'' mat
