''JOHNSON’S MEXICO''  New York:  Johnson and Ward, c. 1862.  Original hand-colored map. (Image 12 1/2 x 15 1/2”)

This very historical map depicts Mexico with districts in contrasting colors, Guatemala, and the southern portion of the United States.  Topographical features are shown with additional notes regarding desert regions and “isolated mountains”. Major towns, cities, missions, forts, waterways and major roads are identified.

The inset, lower left, depicts ''The Isthmus of Tehuantepec''.

A very informative view of the region as it was known in the mid 19th century, at the time of the American Civil War.
