''Colton’s CENTRAL AMERICA'' New York: Johnson and Browning, c. 1860. Engraved map with original hand-coloring.(Image: 12 3/4 x 15 1/2’’)

Although the map is dated 1855, it was actually published by Johnson & Browning in 1860 following their acquisition of Colton. They still retained the Colton title, adding only their name as publishers (this changed with the 1861 atlas).

This historical map depicts the countries of Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, San Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica in Central America with their districts in contrasting colors. Topographical features are shown with additional notes regarding various boundaries. Major towns, cities, missions, forts, and waterways are identified.  Indian tribes are located throughout.

The insets depict ''THE NICARACUA ROUTE'' ''HARBOR OF SAN JUAN DE NICARAGUA'' ''ISTHMUS OF PANAMA'' ''…ASPINWALL CITY…'' and ''CITY OF PANAMA''. A very informative view of the region as it was known in the 1860’s.
