''A NEW MAP OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA, THE TERRITORIES OF OREGON & UTAH, and the chief part of NEW MEXICO'' Philadelphia: Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co., c. 1853.  Engraved map with original hand coloring. Nice condition, with overall even toning. (Ref: Wheat #756, 812; Wheat California #266) (Image: 15 3/4 x 12 1/2’’)

This very historical and handsome map depicts the West, as it existed for a very brief period of time. Oregon Territory (established 1848) is shown – with boundaries extending to include present-day Washington and Idaho.

Utah Territory includes most of what would become Nevada Territory and Colorado Territory (both created in 1861). New Mexico Territory includes what would soon become Arizona Territory.

Most of the boundaries shown were dictated by the recently passed 1850 Compromise. Although the map is dated 1850 in the lower margin, it was published in the 1853 Cowperthwait atlas, and  does not yet show the new boundary between the US and Mexico established by the Gadsden Purchase  - the very same year.

Topographical features are well detailed with major towns, land, and water routes identified. Indian Tribes are located and the exploratory Routes of Louis & Clark, Fremont and Kearney are also provided. An excellent view of the region as it existed prior to the Civil War!
