c 1470-90 Book of Hours Table of Contents leaf

$0.00

Original leaf from a manuscript Book of Hours. Red-ruled for thirty-two lines of text, written in two columns in French in an elegant angular gothic book-hand script on animal vellum. Rubrics in red.  Recto blank. (178 x 125mm – 7 x 5’’)

France: Rouen, (Use of Rouen) c. 1470-90.

An unusual artifact of Medieval Book of Hours production! This leaf is an original sequential listing of the contents of a unique Book of Hours.  Contemporary contents listings are very uncommon, seldom appearing in manuscript Book of Hours, and only surfacing with regularity in the early printed Hours.

The list notes sections such as the Calendar, The Four (Lessons) of the Evangelists, Hymns including the “Ave Regina Celorum”, and listing of Saints including Laurence, Christopher, Nicholas, Anthony, Anne, Katherine and Barbara.
