A rare and attractive leaf written with red and black ink in bold Bohairic script, accompanied by Arabic rubric and translation. The text consists of a portion of the Eucharist rites with Saint Basil’s Prayers of the Oblation (Offertory). The names of Jesus Christ, The Father and the Holy Spirit appear in the recto text after the rubric.
Bohairic, the Coptic dialect spoken in the western Nile delta has been used by the Coptic Orthodox Church since approximately the ninth century. The Coptic language is the final stage of the ancient Egyptian language, but it is written in the Greek alphabet, except for seven letters. The majority of Coptic words are taken from the ancient Egyptian language, with only two thousand words borrowed from Greek.
The Euchologion was one of the principal liturgies of the Byzantine and Coptic Christian churches, roughly corresponding to the Roman Rite's Missal, Ritual, and Pontifical, combined…Originally a comprehensive prayer book but now confined to the prayers used in the evening and morning offering of incense, and the three anaphoras of SS. Basil, Gregory The Theologian, and Cyril the Great, the last being the Liturgy of Saint Mark the apostle.
