Original leaf from a manuscript Book of Hours. 24 lines of text, ruled in red, written in Latin in an elegant angular gothic book-hand script on animal vellum. Rubrics in red.(178 x 125mm – 7 x 5’’) 

Three two-line illuminated initials, four one-line illuminated initials and five illuminated line-extenders in gold on red or blue ground.

Unusual vibrant and elaborate panel borders on recto and verso in colorful floral and geometric motif  (including roses – symbol of the Blessed Virgin Mary) in red, green, blue and white on gold ground.

The leaf continues the hymn Stabat Mater Dolorosa: “Inflammatus…” (Be to me, O Virgin, nigh, lest in flames I burn and die, in His awful Judgment Day. Christ, when Thou shalt call me hence, by Thy Mother my defense, by Thy Cross my victory; While my body here decays, may my soul Thy goodness praise, safe in paradise with Thee. Amen).

The two-line illuminated “I” begins:  “Interveniat…” (O Lord Jesus Christ, we beseech Thee that the blessed Virgin Mary, Thy Mother, whose most holy soul was pierced by the sword of sorrow in the hour of thy passion, may appeal for us to Thy clemency, now and at the hour of our death. Through Thee, Jesus Christ, Savior of the world, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit, livest and reignest, forever and ever. Amen).

The two-line illuminated “A” begins:  “Ave cuius…” (Hail, thou whose Conception, Our feast of great joy, Fills heaven and earth With new gladness. Hail, thou whose Nativity Became our celebration; Bright as the Morning Star Thou precedest the true Sun…).
