Original printed leaf, on hand-made paper, with very fine typography on both pages and one large woodcut illustration. (250 x 173mm – 9 7/8 x 6 ¾’’’) 

From Ludolphus de Saxionia’s  “Leven Ons Liefs Heeren Ihesu Christi”.  Printed by Henrik Eckert Van Hornberch in Antwerp, 1503. This edition utilized the woodcut illustrations made for the 1488 edition by Leeu. Reference:  Hain # 10049; Campbell # 1183.

Two columns of Gothic print with one three-line initial illuminated by hand and numerous one-line initials heightened by hand with red.  The large woodcut depicts Matthew 17:26 “But that we may not scandalize them, go to the sea, and cast in a hook: and that fish which shall first come up, take: and when thou hast opened its mouth, thou shalt find a stater: take that, and give it to them for me and thee”. Christ is shown with his Apostles retrieving a coin from the mouth of a fish and handing it over to the tax man.
