$0.00

'‘DESCRITTIONE DELL ISOLA & Terra di Santa Crose, OVERO MONDO NVOVO”   Venice: Tommaso Porcacchi, c. 1572-1620.  Engraved by Girolamo Porro with later hand-coloring. From L’Isole Piu Famose Del Mondo… (The most famous islands of the world). (Ref: Burden #42). (Image: 4 1/8 x 5 5/8’’)

Porcacchi's map of North America is the earliest obtainable map of North America, preceded only by Paolo Forlani's rare map of North America, published in Venice in 1565.

The Forlani map includes many firsts which are included in the Porcacchi map, such as the first detailed depiction of the Straits of Anian and the first to show Quivira Pro (Quivira Province) in the northwestern quadrant of North America.

The map reflects the second Cartier Voyage and early Spanish explorations in the Southwest, most notably Coronado's expedition. The treatment of the West Coast of North America, Baja California and the misdirected River flowing from the St. Lawrence area to the Atlantic are noteworthy.

Porto de San Michel (San Diego) is also shown. The map shows an unusual bulge in the California peninsula and notes Giapan (Japan) offshore to the west.

The map is further enhanced with a compass rose and decorative title cartouche. An essential map for North American Collectors.

Presented in an archival 16x12'' mat.
