$0.00

“PLANISPHÆRUM TERRESTRE...”   Leipzig: Johann Huebner, c. 1728. Engraved map with later hand-coloring. (Image: 7 1/2 x 9'')

A rare and decorative map from Huebner's Staats Zeitungs Lexicon.   It depicts the world in hemispheres with California as an island, and the Northwest Coast of America extending toward Asia.

Australia includes the western and northern coasts and discoveries of Van Dieman.  New Zealand is only partially delineated and no Antarctica defined.  Numerous exploratory routes are traced.

Above the hemispheres are five astronomical diagrams.  Beneath the map is a pair of globes and an armillary sphere, surrounded by putti using a variety of navigational instruments.  The background depicts natural phenomenon such as volcanoes, whirlpools, waterspouts, sunset and a rainbow.  Top left margin is "Tab. I. Geograph et Astronom."
