GRAY’S NEW MAP OF THE COUNTRIES SURROUNDING THE BLACK SEA...”  Frank A. Gray. Philadelphia: O.W. Gray & Son, c. 1878 (dated 1877 lower rt).  Lithographed map with original hand-coloring. (Image: 16.25 x 26.5 inches). Excellent condition and color, centerfold as issued.

This very detailed map depicts the Balkans and countries surrounding the Black Sea. One of the best and most interesting large format maps of the region to appear in a 19th Century American Atlas. It extends from the Caspian Sea, to Ertvan and Elisabatapol and Kurdisan, then to Cyprus and the Mediterranean, including all of Turkey and the Balkans and the regions of Southern Russia north of the Black Sea and the Crimean peninsula.

The map is color-coded to reflect the region controlled by the Russian Empire and Turkish Ottoman Empire. Topographical features are shown and major cities, villages, railroads, mountains and waterways are identified.

The map inset lower left depicts THE BOSPHORUS OR STRAIT OF CONSTANTINOPLE”. The chart at the bottom provides the “ETYMOLOGICAL EXPLANATION OF VARIOUS PREFIXES, TERMINATIONS AND FORMATIVE SYLLABLES of many Names on the Map”.
